I believe the settlements may in fact be the primary root of the ongoing conflict. Not just settler violence, but the settlements themselves. 

The settlements in West Bank are undeniably a colonialist action. Colonizing another country is inherently violent. Israel is pushing into West Bank with military force, taking Palestinian land and kicking Palestinians out of their homes, with now over 750,000 settlers. It appears they are seeking demographic shift to allow annexation to become viable. It is a truly colonial action, antithetical to peace.

As occupying power, it is incumbent upon Israel to shepherd the peace process. They are capable of sweeping unilateral actions which the Palestinians are not. They control all of Palestine with military force. Even Gaza following the 2005 "withdrawal" was simply placed in the same circumstance as every city in West Bank, under complete blockade and siege, all movement of people and goods in and out controlled by Israel, whether by land, sea or air.

Thus, only Israel is capable of unilaterally ending its side of the violence. The PNA cannot control terrorist militants like Hamas, but Israel can control the settlements. An end to the violence, a ceasefire, is the bare minimum condition for a peace process to begin. The settlements are constantly mentioned by Hamas as justification for their violence, whether you or I feel that moral calculus is just.

Meanwhile the PNA, the official representative of Palestine in the UN, and Israel's only potential partner for peace negotiations, remains completely pacified. The only condition the PNA has for peace negotiations has consistently been ceasing settlement expansion. Since the 2006 civil war, when they partnered with the US and Israel against Hamas and drove them out of West Bank, they have cooperated with Israel. Theoretically, when Israel occupies Gaza this is who they will hand administration to. By any meaningful measure, the PNA have refrained from state violence against Israel for over 15yrs. Twice the US occupation of Japan. 

The US rebuilt Japan following WW2 from a xenophobic enemy into a modern industrial democracy, and a strong ally, in just 7yrs. Imagine if they had instead just blockaded the cities, and began moving in hundreds of thousands of Americans into the countryside, investing billions of dollars into settlement infrastructure instead of rebuilding Japan. Where would the peace process have stood 56yrs later? When exactly would the Japanese acts of terrorism against them have started, and begun a cycle of justification for endless occupation?

The PNA exists as a security contractor for Israel inside Area "A". Mahmoud Abbas is an Israeli figurehead. In truth, he has no choice whether he sits at the table with them. He is chained to whatever table Israel sets for him. Just as Emperor Hirohito was in Japan. Yet, they have no peace offer on the table for him. No roadmap for any process to engage in.  They are content to simply continue the settlements, daily violence, rather than set the table for peace.

The only way peace can work following the full commencement of a military occupation is if the occupying power dedicates itself to peace, and persists in that process even when inevitable terrorist actions aiming to derail it occur. Without that dedication, peace is impossible - and replacing that with a dedication to colonial-settlement of the occupied land isn't just contrary to the entire endeavor of peace, it's actively seeking conflict.

1) Yes, I have spent a lot more than 2 hours absorbing mainstream media, as well as non-mainstream media talking and showing settler violence. 

2) I have visited in a Palestinian village during my service in the IDF, I've had talks with many Palestinians both during my service, and afterwards as a citizen. in the IDF I have been in a village both at daytime and at nighttime and haven't seen any records of settler violence (probably because it is not as common or in every area as some of the media is trying to portray it and it's only in certain areas where the settlers are the more "hardcore"). I have seen some settlers try to stand besides the IDF while the IDF deals with riots, but we kicked them out pretty quickly. Outside of the IDF I haven't been in a Palestinian village or city at night.   
IIRC that it is illegal for Israeli to enter A areas where the vast majority of Palestinians live (though it is not really enforced, especially on Arab Israelis). Moreover, I don't think Israelis or jews are particularly welcome to stay there.. there are many stories about Israelis that by accident entered a Palestinian village and got lynched or almost lynched, including people I know myself . That being said, there is a small group of Israelis that do enter there and stay at hotels, and from what I've heard there are great parties in Ramallah.. 

3) Yes, and I'm very much against settler violence.   


To be fair, the reason I don't think there are very strong details about settler violence which is the reason most Israelis are a bit fuzzy on the details. it is often times ill recorded.. when it is recorded and in large scale, like the ones happened in Hawara in September I think, Israelis are very aware of that and it is on the news. For instance, in the demonstrations against the government because of the judicial reform Netanyahu tried to pass, there was a chant saying to the police - "Where have you been in Hawara??" stating that the police should have treated the violent settlers that went and burned things in Hawara.   
When it's small scale and recorded I'd say people are less interested in hearing about it, Cause it's something that's not fun to hear, kind of like police brutality in some places. though some of it gets to the news from time to time, especially the more left leaning news.   


I'd say that the reason that the people you talk with are offended by it is that you can't use settler violence as a justification for what Hamas did, and so many people try to do so. There are many people trying to find a justification for Hamas' violence. there is none.   
Of course settler violence isn't justified, but it is incomparable to what Hamas did on October 7th, and for people to bring it up now, as if there's some kind of symmetry is kind of a BS move. People should bring settler violence not during war as a way to rally up opposition to Israel. When you do that, the Israeli people you speak with, that are not violent settlers, probably feel like you don't really care for them, cause if you did - why do you speak about it now when Israel is in what's perceived as an existential war, instead of before.

That is why there is hardly a left wing in Israel. Our differences are mostly about which approach should be taken to be as safe as we can from terror and genocide. There is a political chaos in Israel for a couple of years since Netanyahu’s charges and trials which made him embrace extremists and he allows them to do whatever they want because the minute they turn their backs on him, his government and illusions of redemption or picking the people for investigation goes down and he loses all power to control his fate. That's a tall order.

Actually I believe that there is plenty of settler violence against Palestinians, and I *also* believe that there is plenty of Palestinan violence against settlers, and I don't believe in *either* side trying to justify their actions because of the other. 

But the extent to which I'm dismissive of this violence is that I think its a symptom, and not a cause. If **both sides** push towards a peace deal then certainly Israel will remove a bunch of their settlers (they have done this many times now - relocating their own settlers). But a decent chunk of those settlers are fundamentalist religious nuts, who tend to be uniformly crazy regardless of religion. Without a peace framework none of this will change. 

Israel doesn't care about protests in Europe (and frankly, why should they care about Europe after what Europe did to the Jews). They won't respond to pressure from the UN (which is, unquestionably, absurdly biased against Israel). And the United States will never drop them as an ally because they're just too valuable in our standoff with Iran.

The Palestinians need to get their act together, put together a legitimate government to act as a negotiating partner, and push for  a realistic peace plan. Then, and only then, the US might lean on Israel to play ball.

Did you ever stop for a moment to consider that maybe just like everything else, the narrative you are being fed about this is false and this doesn't happen to be the one thing that the "Palestinians" are telling the truth about?

Just very recently [this](https://www.regavim.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/RegavimSilufEng0406digital.pdf) study was published that takes a look at the claims of settler violence being some sort of a widescale phenomenon, and I highly suggest going over it, but just to give you some of the most important facts:

They examined a UN report into over supposedly 8000 violent attacks by settlers in a period of 7 years, they found that out of these, thousands didn't have any reliable source, and only 10 percent were actual violent incidents in Judea and Samara and the rest was things like visiting the temple mount and other archeological sites, and even car accidents and tresspassing, categorized as "violence"

And even in that 10 percent, which is about 800 incidents, some of them were self defense or cases where it wasn't clear who started the confrontation. 

Yesterday is a great example of this. I had to go to the very bottom of the [article](https://www.ynet.co.il/news/article/byv4lljvgg) about the incident where the reporter, Einat Halavi, a well known anti settler activist, squeezed just a few words from the IDF response. In it, they describe this as a  mutual confrontation that started with rock throwing between the Jews and Arabs, until the Arabs started shooting at the armed forces, who responded, killing 3. Unfortunate. But not the same as "settlers burning everything in sight unprovoked" as you described the situation, is it?

That isn't your say it's not happening, but cases where settlers just go and commit violent acts unprovoked are extremely rare. I have no problem condeming that, and I supporter every case where settlers who engaged in terrorism got [life sentences](https://www.ynetnews.com/article/rk110RCnEw) as they should. I'm just bothered by this selective outrage. 

Compare this to  "Palestinian" violence where in [2024](https://www.jns.org/over-6300-terror-attacks-against-jews-in-judea-and-samaria-in-2024/) alone, there were 6400 violent incidents in Judea and Samara, which included:

The numbers aren't even close. It's not even a case of "both aides are equally to blame" or a tit for tat, we are talking about a factor of about few hundreds to one. So I'm not sure why when there's a violent confrontation there, your immediate thiught was "it must be those settlers attacking poor innocent Palestinians again!" As opposed to them being the instigators of violence, which they are in the vast majority of cases.

There was also a research about the statistics of "settler's violence" cases and it turns out they count every fart as settler's violence, for example, if you hit the car infront of you - that's settler's violence, if the arabs had a riot and the riot was handled by the idf... I mean are you seeing anybody legitimately try to justify it? Most Israelis and Jews don't support what the settlers do. From my understanding, these conflicts with rock throwing and fighting happen often from both sides and the Israeli police usually break them up. But this time, when the Israeli police showed up, the palestinians started throwing rocks and then shooting at the police, who obviously are going to defend themselves as they do in almost any country. Do that to an American cop, Mexican cop, Chinese cop, etc and you are almost certainly going to get shot. Its a sad situation but there really was no other outcome once weapons got involved.

If you would read up on the actual situation instead of listening to propaganda, you would see that the Palestinians attack the settlers, too. It is hardly a matter of "evil settlers vs innocent palis": if anything, the settlers are a reaction to decades of Palestinian violence. 


That said, of course anyone breaking the law must be dealt with and extremism of any kind tends to be bad. In light of the other problems and threats Israel faces today, they are far down the priority list. I'm sure someone will suggest that dealing with the extreme settlers will somehow make the world love Israel, but that's just hopeful wishing.

As others have said, the vast majority of Israelis don't support settler violence at all, so I won't go into that. Nobody seems to be answering how the violent sects (who are also a minority of the overall settler movement) justify their own actions.

They see Israel as far too soft on terrorism. From their point of view, Israel uses "Western", reactionary tactics to defend the country, rather than being proactive and bringing the fight to the enemy. They believe that this makes us look weak. As Rabbi Meir Kahane once said, "If you're good to the Arabs you're weak, and if you're weak you're dead." We often boast about having the most moral army in the world, but some extremist factions in Israel believe that it's exactly that morality that's getting Jews murdered.

They believe that the best way to defend the country is to "speak the language of the Arabs" which in their opinion is vigilante violence. They see themselves as the true defenders of the country, which is also why they throw rocks at soldiers. All the soldiers are doing is "getting in the way".

Well, Settlers create their own narratives sometimes. For instance, its commonly accepted in those circles that Baruch Goldstein's actions prevented a massacre  of Jews and accepted that the arabs were stocking weapons in Machpela... Though the rest of Israseli society was and is horrified by what he did back then and that narrative doesnt seem to be true at all. 

Here too, there is probably some bizzare internal logic to settler violence but mainstream (or so I think) Israeli opinion is that these types of settlers only harm israel and themselves.

I’m of similar perspective, but I want to say while many pro-Israel people condemn such behavior the Israeli government does not. And since they do not, they set the precedent that this kind of behavior is ok. I don't think you can justify it. Those who try to excuse it would say that these attacks are very rare, and most of the time are retaliation for Palestinian attacks. I'm not sure I completely believe that

I don't condone it, but the rationale may be that seven soldiers died in Gaza in an ambush. That's the whole reasoning behind the "price tag" movement.

How Israel has conducted itself on the West Bank is deplorable and indefensible in my view. It either annexes the West Bank and gives everyone voting rights or it allows it to be a Palestinian State.

John Kerry's triangle curse shows up once more: Israel cannot, at the same time, have all three between a liberal democracy, a Jewish character, and the West Bank. One of those three has to be sacrificed.

Hard to see why the rioters would attack a military base if they feel supported by the governing coalition.
